Money For Nothing (We Gotta Move These Color TVs)

Brought two big color televisions to the transfer station for Peter.

Loaded up the truck again with detritus from the tree felling and backyard grasses.

The brush was horrible, huge amounts of cat briar. The area looks 100% better without the cherry and all that trashy weed.

Ron went to Home Depot. I kept an appointment for teeth cleaning.

Neemed ‘Em; Tree Work

Sprayed the roses – all of them – with Neem. Won’t help the branches already affected, hoping it will keep the rest healthy.

Tree work happened today at Edgewater. Unfortunately, a hydraulic fuel line broke, and there’s a good possibility we may lose part of the lawn. Based on advice from Tom and Keith, I held back $100 to cover the work. Hope it’s not more than that.

I did a volunteer stint at Highfield: weeding and transplanting. Did some extracurricular work in the Allium bed: remove a couple of huge weeds and lots of detritus.

Planted a card and a paper embedded with seeds in our gardens.

Ron mowed front and back lawns. He was cranky most of the afternoon; among other things, he was angry that I asked the tree people to haul away the cherry. We were able to stop them before they felled the trunk, though, and they were nice enough to cut it up in modest lengths for us. I called Emma; she said she’d be glad to have it.

Ribs, jasmine rice and brussel sprouts for dinner.

And More Seeds

Butter and Sugar Corn and Kentucky Wonders.

Planted two black cherry tomatoes from Mahoney’s.

Set up the soaker in Alpha’s garden.

Did some watering of transplants; ground is staying pretty damp. Rain is predicted for most of this week.

Seeds

Lettuce, Nasturtiums, Marigolds, radishes, spinach.

Old seeds; not expecting much, hoping anyway.

We did laundry and changed sheets. Ron got accessories to make hose feeders.

Smokey arrived earlier and rested on the chair and then the bed for a while. He’s a comfort when he’s calm.

Watered roses and a couple of the gardens. Ran around doing transfer station and errands, almost forgot about Robert until 5:03!

New Garden; Fences; Garden Sales

We’ve been working on the gardens for about 6 weeks, since roughly April 8.

Yesterday, we finished setting up the last fence for the “bean” garden.

This is the big plant sale weekend. I got started at Green Briar and Spencer’s yesterday: daylilies, coreopsis, heuchera, peony.

Today is Roche Bros for hanging plants and the Master Gardeners for herbs and veggies. I showed up at Roche a little before 7, and people were already there, hoarding grocery carts full of hanging plants. I was able to get two nice geraniums for the back, nasturtiums, and a fine selection of herbs: rosemary, parsley, sage, dill. Got everything planted.

Went to the Fairgrounds a little before 9. There was already a long line to get in, and I figured there weren’t enough plants in the world to accommodate the people who were there, let alone the rest of us.

So, I came home and put in a new garden in the front at the corner of the driveway and the walkway with the plants I bought yesterday. My hope is to put in a perennial border, eventually.

While Ron made a transfer station run to unload the truck, I fell asleep. Smokey had stopped by for a visit and rested for a bit in my chair.

Ron and I worked on soaker hose placement.

I spent a portion of the afternoon in the hammock. Saw a couple of hummers and cleaned up the invasives we’d chopped down the other day.

Jaffrey

We left the Cape for the funeral of Ron’s friend Mike from high school.

It was a moving service, brilliantly done, and I regret that I didn’t get to meet Mike.

We made it back well before Thursday night traffic.

We’d set up the tomato plants on Wednesday and gave all the gardens a good watering.  At one point on 495, the car thermometer registered 101 degrees!  When we hit the ocean effect gradient, it dropped to the low 70’s, a good reason for why we live here.

Wiped Out

We did our usual for a Sunday, laundry and transfer station.  Changed back to mega bed sheets.

I also unloaded two 40 pound bags of compost, cut down some errant branches at the top of the “U” and raked out the leaves that were covering the iris tubers.

Pleased to learn that the Roche plant sale is next Saturday.  Was afraid we’d missed it.

Made stir fry chicken with piles of vegetables and rice for supper.

We are both still tired from yesterday.

Plant Sales

Made it to three: Sandwich and Aptucxet Garden Clubs and Woods Hole Library.

Found two beautiful Sun Gold tomato plants, a 6-pack of beefsteaks, two nice Campanulas and two 6-packs of kale and romaine lettuce.

Planted everything but the tomatoes which have not been hardened off; these are in the cold frame for now.  Rained last night.  I think the seedlings in the new garden are either squash or cukes.  Ron reports roots in the compost.

Ron mowed the back yard and put together three tripods for beans.  He mowed/ground up the clover in the tomato garden.  I raked it back into the soil.

I also dug up about 3 inches of grass that abut the back steps and, thus, is difficult to mow, and transplanted the violets dug up from the garden in the hope they’ll prevent the grass from growing back.

Found some 12 inch Stanley threaded rods at Botello to reinforce the plastic fencing.

Stopped by Highfield on my way back from Woods Hole to see the herb planters.

Valley Farm

PT and Tai Chi on Thursday.  Stopped by Valley Farm on the way home for compost, was invited to sit in on a lecture by Russ Morton about vegetable gardening.

Had a phone interview yesterday for a remote job. Did a short workout afterwards.

Ron put in several hours finishing up the new garden fence. I splurged on lunch, me at Subway, Ron from Wild Fire.

Steve Winwood’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” perfectly describes how I feel waiting for Ron to get off the pot.
