Salads; Sauce; Alpha; Art

Made two salads and some less than perfect tomatoes into sauce yesterday.

Ron cleaned up the kitchen; it’s much nicer now!

Alpha, Ron and I went to Lillia and Herb’s art opening at the Falmouth Art Center.  There was also a juried show going on at the same time, so it was quite crowded for a while.

We love their work and Alpha fell in love with the Center.  They may apply for a scholarship to take a class.

They spotted a beautiful set of candleholders, and I bought them.  We’ll pick them up when the show is over, in about 3 weeks.

Picked up a couple of boxes of “used” strawberries and a couple of other groceries at Jack in the Beanstalk.  Ron and Alpha put together strawberry shortcakes for us.

Made a big breakfast this morning:  blueberry pancakes and a Western-type omelet with cheddar cheese, pepper and used cherry tomatoes.

Tomato Pie

Ron made salad, I made tomato pie for supper.  Elegant combination, enhanced by the new oils from Gustare.

The Safelite mobile van person replaced Ron’s windshield today.

I sent a pic to Jen of her friend’s house under construction.  Told her we’d be glad to help if needed.

I got over the data access hurdle with the new version of Warranty.

Set up the tile for Ron’s wallet.

Wrapped up my last project for LaMotte and got started on integrating a new emailer.  Downloaded a new version of the Android app, but was told to hold off on testing until it’s ported to staging.

Paul’s friends punked out on both of us.  Very pleased that Alpha will be joining us on Saturday!

Labor Day; Cape Cod Playhouse; Sesuit Harbor

Trekked to Dennis today to pick up tix at the Cape Cod Playhouse and figured after almost 16 years as a Cape Codder, it was time to visit the Sesuit Harbor Cafe.  It’s kind of a waste for vegetarians, but the views are terrific.

Picture-perfect day to be on or near the water.  Gorgeous ride on 6A, too.

Ron cleaned the bird bath.  I adjusted the new drapes and took soil samples from four gardens, to dry overnight and be tested tomorrow, or whenever I have time.  Also did some work on Warranty.

Didn’t realize that I’d purchased two sets of tickets to Second City, so am giving the extra set to Paul to hand off to friends of his.

Psalm 139 NIV

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Labor Day Weekend; Ron Is My Hero

We joined the Move to Remove standout at Falmouth Green yesterday morning.  Nice to see familiar faces from Occupy, like Sandy (below right), Peter, Paul and Joyce.  Pix by Paul.

It rained earlier today, so good that Ron mowed the lawn yesterday.

I misplaced/lost my keys.  Ron was nice enough to drive us to North Falmouth to look for them around 8:45 last evening, so I treated to ice cream at the Holy Cow.

I went to the BofA parking lot, Falmouth Green and Stop & shop this afternoon.  Got to see the surf at Falmouth Heights beach but didn’t stop.  After dump run,  Ron found my keys in the potholder drawer.  Ordered a Tile Mate.

Now, if we could only find Ron’s tweed cap, which disappeared somewhere between here and Chestertown.

Last evening, I bought shoes and matching Black Watch plaid flannel shirts at the new LL Bean store in Mashpee Commons.  25% plus another 15% off for opening an LL Bean credit card for a total savings of around 36%: even better than the employee discount.  I plan to get rid of all my old, beat up flannel shirts, which have served me well but have seen better days.

Did some weeding yesterday.

We spotted a plastic but nice fake bamboo plant at the transfer station.  Ron is bringing it to Edgewater for Peter’s office and picking up Robert from work.  My stomach rebelled after I wolfed down french fries this afternoon from my favorite hole in the wall.  Ron, who certainly is my hero today, made a pot of tea before he left.  Feeling much better.

Orleans; Corn

We got to share pizza and ice cream with our niece Jen, her kids and her charming friends this past Tuesday.  It’s been three years since we last saw them.

Met them at Zia’s.  Alpha came with us, and Peter joined us later.

Topped the evening with a visit to Sundae School.

It started to rain on the way back, and we got more rain Tuesday night.  Yesterday (Wednesday) was cool and sunny in the afternoon.

I harvested corn this morning.  The tops were rotted off and had earwigs.  What a disappointment!

Lots of beans, though, and I picked a couple of zukes and tomatoes as well.  I think we are past peak for tomatoes, and if the weather stays this cool, we are probably close to done for the season.

Busy Weekend, Nice Party

The Bakers had an open house yesterday, and we got to have a long conversation with our Selectman John Cotton.  Great spread and lots of cheer.

We were on the road Saturday and ran into traffic around notorious NYC.

Before leaving Maryland, we stopped at a local farmstand/gourmet food store for corn, peaches, cantaloupe, honey, pickled watermelon rind and blueberry jam.

Laura came over to deliver our mail.

Sunday, after breakfast and the papers, Ron did laundry and we did the transfer station run.

Patron Saint of Gardens

August 30 is the Feast of St. Fiacre, an Irish monk who established a shrine and garden in the French province of Brie.

Residents of the village that developed from his land, Saint-Fiacre in Seine-et-Marne, celebrate by parading and decorating his statue with flowers and herbs.

It’s advised to keep the stems of flowers and herbs intact to retain fragrance and flavor.
