{"id":868,"date":"2007-10-25T07:39:54","date_gmt":"2007-10-25T12:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hendersonbrook.net\/wp\/?p=868"},"modified":"2007-10-25T07:39:54","modified_gmt":"2007-10-25T12:39:54","slug":"spock-and-saavik-braveheart-and-boudica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hendersonbrook.net\/?p=868","title":{"rendered":"Spock and Saavik, Braveheart and Boudica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/newsOne\/idUSN0140518520070803\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> by Yale post-doc Victoria Brescoll is being spun as a cautionary tale for certain women in politics.<br \/>\nAccording to Dr. Brescoll&#8217;s research, men are rewarded for being angry at work, while women are penalized.<br \/>\nThis is a variation on the theme that women aren&#8217;t supposed to cry, either, particularly in a &#8220;professional&#8221; setting.<br \/>\nOn the other hand, if a woman is self-controlled, she&#8217;s seen as a malevolent automaton, capable of who knows what, the lurid and unsubstantiated allegations about Vince Foster&#8217;s death being one example.<br \/>\nIn the film &#8220;The Wrath of Khan&#8221;, the half Vulcan\/half Romulan character Saavik captured the public&#8217;s imagination because of her stoicism, made palatable (even adorable) by her youthful, exotic looks.<br \/>\nThis is in contrast to failed attempts to popularize warrior women like Boudica, who has been betrayed as fierce, angry and (the greatest sin of all) an effective leader.<br \/>\nIt seems we&#8217;ll have to wait until Stardate 8130.4 for the kind of tolerance, humility and understanding reflected in Spock and Saavik&#8217;s famous <a href=\"http:\/\/home.teleport.com\/~vli\/phrase.htm\" target=\"_blank\">dialog<\/a> from &#8220;The Wrath of Khan&#8221;:<br \/>\nSaavik: <em>Gishen worla ihk-banut<\/em><br \/>\n(Admiral Kirk is) not what I expect<br \/>\nSpock: <em>Wakli ak&#8217;wikman &#8211; ot-lan?<\/em><br \/>\nWhat surprises you, lieuenant?<br \/>\nSaavik: <em>Ish-veh ni komihn<\/em><br \/>\nHe&#8217;s so human<br \/>\nSpock: <em>Kling akhlami buhfik &#8211; Saavik-kam<\/em><br \/>\nNobody&#8217;s perfect, Saavik<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A study by Yale post-doc Victoria Brescoll is being spun as a cautionary tale for certain women in politics.
