This morning, I went to a showing<\/a> of “WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price” at a local church, when my left eye popped.
\nI started seeing big “floaters” and thousands of tiny black spots, and the characterisic “waves” of an eye migraine – there is no pain, but your vision is distorted, as if you’re looking through a thin waterfall.
\nSo, watching the excesses of the WAL-MART Corporation made me sick.<\/p>


\nLater in the afternoon when it started to get dark, I noticed occasional flashes of light out of the corner of the eye, a symptom of a detached retina.
\nI went to the ER at Falmouth Hospital, which was typically jovial, they are a good-natured and efficient crew, and they arranged for me to see an opthalmologist tomorrow.
\nMy doctor, Michael F. Oats, is a heavy-hitter: he was elected president of the medical staff at Falmouth Hospital in 1998 and he also served on the Cape Cod Healthcare board of trustees.
\nSo much for my planned trip to Sturbridge, and maybe it’s just as well we opted not to do the roof this year – besides Bob’s legal fees, my medical plan has a $1,000 deductible.
\nUncle Sam, don’t look for any largesse from me this year.
\nProbably also just as well that the cynical young know-it-all’s I’ve been interviewing with recently haven’t offered me any contracts.
\nThat’s all I would have needed, to blow off my first day because of an old lady’s infirmity.
\nSo far this month, we’ve had Sandy’s pneumonia, Peter’s bad teeth, and now my eye – and why am I joking about any of this?
