She&#8217;d been beaten with a baseball bat, thrown down stairs and made to stand in hot water by her adoptive &#8220;mother&#8221; and stepfather.<br \/>\nSeveral witness told police that they saw the alleged abuse take place, but apparently did nothing.<br \/>\nThis is the core of it:  adoptees are considered to be property, even more so than natural children, sort of like buying an appliance.
